9140 - PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
|
ARTICLE I |
Name
The name of the Council shall be Parent Advisory Council of the Southern Local School District.
|
ARTICLE II |
Objectives of the Council
The objectives of the Parent Advisory Council are as follows:
| A. | to identify and delineate the most pressing needs of the Southern Local School District and the community it serves as seen by administration, staff, students, and parents. | ||
| B. | to serve as a coordinating body to bring together persons with primary concerns in the identified areas of need and those with appropriate talents to seek and implement solutions to the problems or opportunities. | ||
| C. | to develop and promote a philosophy and mode of operation that will make extended use of facilities and equipment available to those persons whose needs can be met by such use. | ||
| D. | to serve as an agency to develop and implement a better communication system that will adequately serve the four (4) major interest groups. |

ARTICLE III |
Membership
Included as members of the Council, without necessity of election, shall be the following ex-officio members:
| A. | the principal or his/her designee from each school, | ||
| B. | two (2) parent members from each school, | ||
| C. | member of the Board of Education, | ||
| D. | President, and another member of the Student Council. |
|
ARTICLE IV |
Council Organization
The Council shall elect from its membership at the May meeting a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and such other officers as it determines necessary for the performance of its duties.

ARTICLE V |
Regular or special meetings of PAC shall be governed by and conducted according to Robert's Rules of Order and shall be open to any interested individuals.
|
ARTICLE VI |
These by-laws may be amended and/or repealed at any meeting provided. The proposed adoption amendment shall have been proposed at a previous meeting. Amendments can be adopted or repealed by a majority vote of the council.

ARTICLE VII |
The President of the Southern Local School District Parent Council may, if necessary, establish the following committees and appoint members to the same.
PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL COMMITTEES
ACADEMIC STANDARD SUPPORT
|
General |
Encourage, promote, and define higher student academic achievements. |
|
Specific |
Promote more publicity and recognition of high academic achievers. |
|
Seek necessary faculty and staff support for high standards. |
|
|
Seek support from community organizations. |
|
|
Help define and communicate Southern Local School District's goal of excellence. |
COMMUNICATIONS
|
General |
To serve as an agency to develop and implement a better communication system which will serve student, parent, faculty, and staff interest groups. |
|
Specific |
Issue a quarterly newsletter. |
|
Conduct a spring orientation program for students and parents entering Southern High School in the fall. |
|
|
Encourage parents to take advantage of Southern Local Board of Education yearly budget meetings. |
POLICY, RULES RECOMMENDATIONS
|
General |
Define and promote policy and rules to be adjusted or altered by the administration or the Board of Education. |
PHYSICAL FACILITIES SUPPORT
|
General |
To develop and promote a philosophy and mode of operation which will extend use of facilities and equipment available to those persons whose needs can be met by such use. |
STUDENT, PARENT, FACULTY SUPPORT
|
General |
To identify and delineate the most pressing needs of the Southern Local School District and the community it serves as seen by faculty, staff, and parents. |
|
Specific |
Conduct a survey of needs, concerns, and positive elements within parent, teacher, and student groups. |
|
Meet with faculty department heads at monthly PAC meetings to learn of their needs and problems on a scheduled rotating basis. |
Effective advisory committees are needed in every major vocational area. They often have functions as follows:
| A. | to speak on behalf of employers and employees from specific occupational areas. | ||
| B. | to serve as a communication channel between the school and occupational groups in the community. | ||
| C. | to recommend a list of the specific skills and suggested related and technical information for the program and courses required for entry into and promotion within a career area. | ||
| D. | to advise on the type of skills, knowledges, and attitudes needed to prepare students for entering into a specific occupation. | ||
| E. | to recommend physical facilities and types of equipment needed for a specific occupational program. | ||
| F. | to make suggestions which will promote and assure the highest quality program. | ||
| G. | to recommend standards of competency and achievement which are necessary for entry into employment and promotion within an occupational area. | ||
| H. | to recommend competent personnel with appropriate educational, business, and industrial experience as potential instructors or administrators. | ||
| I. | to assist with an evaluation of the program of instruction. | ||
| J. | to suggest ways for improving the dissemination of program information to potential students and employers. | ||
| K. | to assist in recruiting potential students, providing internships, and in locating appropriate jobs for qualified graduates. | ||
| L. | to keep the school informed on current specific needs and changes in the labor market. | ||
| M. | to provide a means for the school to inform the community of needed occupational programs. | ||
| N. | to assess program needs in terms of the needs of the community. | ||
| O. | to assist in long-term program planning. |
