8442A - ILLNESS AND INJURY

First Aid

First aid treatment is to be given to a student only for accidents which occur during school hours.

All first aid treatment given must be recorded.

School personnel shall not diagnose illness or administer medication of any kind unless directed to do so by a physician.

Informing Parents

Parents should immediately and tactfully be notified of their child's sudden illness or serious accident. If possible, they should be summoned by telephone.

Illness at School

If a student becomes ill during the school day, s/he is to go to the office with a slip filled out by the classroom teacher. The student will either return to class or be sent home as recommended by the nurse or the person so designated in the main office. Unless accompanied by parent or guardian prior contact with the home must be made before the student is permitted to leave.

Students may not come to the office between classes. They must first go to class and be excused by the teacher.

A parent or person listed on the emergency slip must be contacted by telephone before permission to leave the building is granted to any student. Students sent home are to sign out in the main office.

Records of Illness or Injury

In all cases of accidents or injuries sustained in school, the teacher in charge of the activity is required to complete an accident report or other appropriate form without delay, and forward same to the principal, who will complete his/her own report and send a copy to the Superintendent.

Records are to be kept on all injuries occurring while students are on school property, in school buildings, on the way to or from school, or at school sponsored activities, no matter how slight the injury.
