5751 - PREGNANCY

The counseling of any female student expecting a baby, is primarily a guidance responsibility. The counselor shall ascertain the condition as early as possible, and notify the principal and the parents.

The school shall refer the student to the family doctor as to whether physical education instruction is harmful to the girl. A statement from the doctor shall be submitted to the Superintendent verifying or disaffirming the condition of pregnancy and indicating any limits to be placed on the student's program. If possible, arrangements for the resumption of education will be worked out with school officials, if she is required to leave.

The counseling services referral procedures should be offered to the parents and to the girl and, if possible, to the male student as well. Upon request of the parents, and a statement from the doctor, the girl may be placed on Home Instruction.

Re-admittance of the student to her interrupted school program should be determined by the principal. The decision, to be made on an individual basis, should depend upon the recommendation of her doctor, and the time of the current school term.
