5335 - CATHETERIZATION

The Board of Education recognizes the special needs of some students. In order to meet these needs, the following is offered.

When the bladder cannot empty itself completely, bacteria can grow and cause urinary tract infection, therefore, clean intermittent catheterization is done to drain urine from the bladder.

Catheterization must be done according to the doctor's prescription.

HOW TO CATHETERIZE

Materials Needed

 A.catheter

 B.plastic bags (to carry catheter)

 C.measuring cup

 D.wash cloth

Steps to Follow

 A.Wash your hands with soapy water. Rinse.

 B.Have student lie down with legs apart or stand in front of toilet.

 C.Separate the folds of the perineum (area between the thighs). Wash the area with soapy water. Rinse.

To Insert Catheter

 A.Hold folds of perineum apart. Hold catheter about one (1) inch from the tip. Gently direct it downward and into the urinary opening about one (1) to two and one-half (2-1/2) inches until the urine flows freely.

 B.Allow urine to flow into the measuring cup.

 C.Be sure to completely empty the bladder.

 D.Slowly remove the catheter. Hold the ends of the catheter with both hands to prevent urine from spilling on clothes.

 E.Empty the urine into the toilet.

Care of the Catheter

 A.Wash hands with soap and water.

 B.Wash the catheter in soapy water after each use so that both inside and outside of the catheter will be clean.

 C.Rinse well and dry with clean towel or tissue.

 D.Put catheter back into plastic bag. Use new plastic bag daily.

 E.Every two (2) days clean catheter (inside and out) with full strength distilled white vinegar. This prevents crystals from forming inside the catheter.
