5120 - ASSIGNMENT TO SCHOOL, CLASS, AND GRADE

The following guidelines shall be followed in assigning students to schools, classes, and grades. All inquiries regarding elementary and secondary students boundaries are to be directed to the Superintendent.

 A.To School

1.Fundamentally, student assignment to elementary schools will be determined by geographical zones.

2.As much as possible, the children of a single family will be assigned to the same school, but families may be assigned to different schools when they live in a divided zone or an overloaded zone.

3.Whenever possible, commitments made to parents in earlier years - either implicitly by tradition or verbally - will be considered in the process of assigning students for the year ahead. Placement policies and individual placements will be reviewed periodically, and in some instances the commitments may have to end.

4.When families relocate from one neighborhood to another within the District during the school year, the children affected may continue their education at their original school if the transportation can be provided by existing bus routes, or if parents provide transportation to/from school.
Such determinations will be made individually by the building principals of the schools involved and the Superintendent.

 B.To Class and Grade

1.Assignments to class and grade shall be made by the principal with the participation of the school staff.

2.Placement will be based on several factors including the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of the individual as revealed by the use of available data and observations of the staff.

 C.Transfer Between Schools
The following procedures shall be followed in a transfer of a student between schools:

1.A request shall be made in writing to the office of the principal by the parent of the student or by an adult student.

2.After consultation with the appropriate personnel, a determination shall be made by the Superintendent regarding the validity of the request and the presence of extreme circumstances that would necessitate such a transfer.

3.A response shall be made to the parent, granting or denying the transfer, by the Superintendent.

4.Thereafter, the regular appeal procedure may be used; that is, appeal the Board.
