3250A - WORKING PERIODS/SCHEDULE BREAKS

Teachers may not leave classes unattended while they indulge in coffee breaks or smoking breaks. Lack of supervision in the classroom at any time can leave the teachers and the Board of Education open to charges of negligence, and thereby provide the basis for costly law suits.

There is no objection to the practice of teachers and other professional staff members smoking or drinking coffee during "preparation periods." Teachers and custodial personnel are asked to cooperate in this matter and to limit carefully the frequency and length of "smoking and coffee breaks."

Due to the hazards that may be present, coffee making devices may not be used only in those areas designated for such use. Coffee should not be carried to or consumed in the classroom.
