Southern Local coaches should serve as positive role models for all students. Coaches should display and expect a high level of sportsmanship. These guidelines were established to help coaches run a class program that other schools will admire and respect.

| | J. | Works as a team member and supports coaches in other sports. |

| | K. | Shows support to teams at other levels by periodically attending games and practices. |

| | L. | Coach does not verbally or physically mistreat students, athletes, or officials. |

| | | 1. | Do not let players, parents, or friends talk you into a decision you may later regret. |
|

Coaches will use the following guidelines to help them make the proper decisions in running their sports program.
| | A. | Student management/discipline is evident at practice.

| | | Athletes are properly supervised at all times. |
|
| | B. | Student management/discipline is evident at games.

|
| | | Make students aware of being positive representatives of Southern. |
|
| | C. | All equipment/uniforms are inventoried at beginning of season. |
|
| | D. | Arranges for shoe sizing and purchasing with a vendor.
|
|
| | | Remember the monetary restrictions some students may have. |
|
| | E. | All equipment/uniforms are inventoried and returned at end of season. |
|
| | F. | Provides list of written rules and consequences to each team member, principal, and athletic director. |
|
| | G. | Shows flexibility in regard to academics, musicals, and other extra-curricular activities when necessary. |
|
| | H. | Does not schedule practices or scrimmages during parent/teacher conferences. |
|
| | I. | Carefully monitor student behavior on buses. |
|
| | | 1. | Noise level should be at an appropriate level for the driver. |
|
| | | 2. | Check bus upon return for cleanliness. |
|
| | J. | Carefully monitors student behavior during "down time" at competitions. |
|
| | | 1. | Coach maintains player control when his/her team is not playing. |
|
| | | 2. | Players maintain proper behavior and support their fellow team. |
|
| | K. | Becomes knowledgeable of and follows the letter and intent of all O.H.S.A.A. rules. |
|
| | | 1. | Follows authorized dates for starting practice, scrimmages, and games. |
|
| | | 2. | Follows guidelines pertaining to open gym, practice, scrimmages, and games. |
|
| | L. | Written practice time schedules are provided to students, principals, and athletic director. |
|
| | M. | Changes in practice schedule are provided to the players, parents, and principal in a timely fashion. |
|
| | N. | Coach arrives at practices/games before students do. Specific advance plans are made when this is not possible. |
|
| | | 1. | Coach arrives fifteen (15) minutes before practice and instructs players to not arrive more than ten (10) minutes before practice. |
|
| | | 2. | Students must not be left unattended. |
|
| | O. | Practices end at scheduled times. |
|
| | | 1. | Do not infringe upon another group's practice time. |
|
| | | 2. | Be considerate of parents who transport students. |
|
| | P. | Coach leaves practices/games after all students are gone. |
|
| | Q. | Coach secures building and grounds before leaving. |
|
| | | 1. | Makes certain windows are closed, toilets flushed, trash picked up, lights out, and doors locked. |
|
| | | 2. | Furniture is in its proper place. Lunch tables at junior high are properly placed. |
|
| | R. | Specific interest is shown in academic progress of students. |
|
| | | 1. | High school students must have passed four (4) subjects in the preceding nine (9) weeks grading period to be eligible. |
|
| | | 2. | Junior high students must pass seventy-five percent (75%) of all graded subjects in the preceding nine (9) weeks period to be eligible. |
|
| | | 3. | Monitor interim reports if applicable. |
|
| | | 4. | The degree of participation in practices and attending games is left to the discretion of the coach. |
|
| | S. | Assures that students ride bus to and from games.
|
|
| | | The following guidelines should be used if students do not which to ride the bus home after the game: |
|
| | | 1. | they are released to their parents |
|
| | | 2. | they are not to be released to other students |
|
| | | 3. | they may ride with another adult if the coach has a note from their parents |
|
| | T. | Communicates to parents making an effect to keep them informed. |
|
| | U. | Coach has a phone tree for team communication and provides it to the principal, parents, and students. |
|
| | V. | All physical cards, insurance forms, and emergency forms are collected before conditioning is permitted.
|
|
| | | Coaches must have copies in their possession for all conditioning, practices, and games. |
|
| | W. | The participation fee ($25.00) is collected, documented, and submitted to Treasurer before the first game.
|
|
| | | Students may not play in games until this fee is paid. |
|
| | X. | Coach has a system for checking school attendance.
|
|
| | | Athletes must be in attendance at least half day to participate in practice or a game. |
|
| | Y. | Coach instructs athletes in proper washing and care of uniforms and equipment; and sends instructions home to parents. |
|
| | Z. | Coach initiates contact with principal to schedule group sports pictures.
|
|
| | | This needs to be done early in the season. |
|
| | AA. | Coach has a current CPR/Sports Medicine Certificate on file in the Treasurer's Office. |
|
| | BB. | A list of team members is given to the principal as early as possible so that eligibility may be determined. |
|
| | CC. | All fund-raising/money-makers are done only with the knowledge and consent of the principal. |
|
| | DD. | Locker room/dressing room appearance and condition is monitored by the coach. |
|
| | | 1. | Athletes are responsible for their equipment and clothing; it should be kept off the floor. |
|
| | | 2. | Report any damages that occur to someone in charge. |
|
| | | 3. | Horseplay is not tolerated. |
|
EE. Coach monitors the gym area.
| | | 1. | Only clean shoes are to be worn on the gym floor. |
|
| | | 2. | No shoes that leave black marks are permitted. |
|
FF. Coach obtains a bus schedule from the athletic director and checks it for accuracy.
GG. Coach informs players and parents as to departure time and return time on bus trips.
| | | 1. | Coach does not leave for home until all players have been picked up. |
|
| | | 2. | (Junior High) If the coach permits students to "hang around" the school until departure time for away games, these student must be properly supervised. |
|
HH. Before the first injury, the coach secures medical supplies from the principal or athletic director.
Coach should have theses available at all practices and games.
II. Coaches are responsible for securing ticket takers, scorekeepers, timekeeper, managers, etc.
JJ. Coaches obtain prior permission from principal before scheduling weekend/holiday practices.
Sunday practices are held to bare minimum and, if absolutely necessary, are held between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m.
KK. If school is closed due to inclement weather the coach should use good judgement in scheduling practice as road conditions improve. If in doubt about having practice call the Superintendent before scheduling practice.
No practices are to be held if the county is under a snow emergency.
LL. Coach notifies the parents immediately and the administration by the next day of any injuries.
MM. Coach follows school policy on suspension.
Any athlete under out-of-school suspension may not attend any school events, including practices and games.
NN. Coach does not use any "volunteer coaches" without the approval of the School Board.
OO. Coach does not share building keys with others.
The principal is responsible for granting other groups permission to use the building.
