2430 - CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
In addition to the regularly scheduled classes, a wide variety of co-curricular activities are provided for students including interscholastic and intramural sports, student government, clubs, publications, dramatics, band, orchestra, school dances, concerts, etc. These activities take place in the late afternoon, evening, or on Saturday, and are recognized as a vital part of the total curriculum of the school.
Faculty Responsibility
| A. | In order to have a successful co-curricular program, the cooperation of the entire faculty and administration is necessary. Each teacher will be responsible to direct or assist with his/her assigned co-curricular activities. | ||
| B. | Attendance of faculty members at school athletic events, plays, concerts, dances, etc., is encouraged. | ||
| C. | An administrator or designee will be assigned to attend each evening or Saturday co-curricular function. | ||
| D. | Faculty sponsors should attend those special fund raising or social activities sponsored by their class. | ||
| E. | Students will not be permitted to conduct a co-curricular activity on or off school grounds, without the supervision of a faculty member. |
Communication
| A. | All communication with the principal regarding co-curricular activities will be through the faculty sponsor. | ||
| B. | A plan of the year's proposed activities for each club and activity must be submitted to the principal no later than September 30th. | ||
| C. | By June 1st, each club or activity advisor will submit a report of the year's activities to the principal including membership lists, minutes, problems, recommendations, and financial report. |
Initiating a New Activity
The list of activities is in constant change as new ones are added and others are dropped. If a student or the student government organization has a special interest the principal must be informed. At least ten (10) students and an advisor with a similar interest are required to start a new activity.
Check-list for Activities
The following checklist for co-curricular activities has been developed to assist faculty members in operating a co-curricular activity on Saturday or in the evening: (i.e., plays, dances, etc.)
| A. | secure permission for the activity from the principal. | ||
| B. | provide publicity and advertising information to the principal at least two (2) weeks before the activity. | ||
| C. | have provision for night deposit or other security arrangement approved by the principal. | ||
| D. | order tickets and program, proof read, and print. | ||
| E. | arrange entertainment/refreshments etc. | ||
| F. | provide for checking coats. | ||
| G. | arrange janitorial services with principal. | ||
| H. | arrange sound and lighting. | ||
| I. | arrange for ushers and/or chaperones/police. | ||
| J. | final report to principal shall include number of tickets sold, number who attended, financial receipts, evaluation, and recommendations. |
Supervision of Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities
| A. | Athletic and intramural coaches must supervise students in the locker room before and after practice or games, see that showers are turned off and all students involved in their activity have dressed and left the building. | ||
| B. | Extra-activity advisors must supervise all activities of their group, are responsible for orderliness of their meeting room, and must see that participants in the activity leave the building promptly. | ||
| C. | All thefts or injuries sustained in these activities must be reported by the next school day, to the principal. If there is a serious injury, the principal should be notified as soon as possible. |
INTERSCHOLASTIC EVENTS
Participation of Southern Local High School and Junior High athletic teams and clubs in interscholastic contests, meets, events, and scrimmages must receive the written permission of the building principal. Student accident insurance and Board liability insurance do not apply to events which are not approved by the building principal and Superintendent. All requests for such activities should be routed through the athletic director to the principal, who will forward the request to the Superintendent.
