5421 - GRADING

The fundamental purpose of any method of evaluating and reporting student performance from kindergarten through grade 12 is to establish and maintain a flow of communication among the school, the student, and the home in the interest of providing feedback and guidance. The school, the student, and the home share this responsibility and each has a role in helping the student achieve to the highest degree possible.

The reporting of student performance in the form of a grade should focus primarily on academic achievement, yet should also reflect student effort and individual rates of learning. Guidelines should be easy to understand, seek consistency throughout the District, and provide for both regular and spontaneous communication.

Parents should be informed regularly and at least four (4) times a year as to the progress their children are making in school. In addition, parents should be alerted as soon as possible when a child's performance or attitude becomes unsatisfactory or shows marked or sudden deterioration.
