8660 - TRANSPORTATION BY PRIVATE VEHICLE

No person shall be approved for the transportation of students in a private vehicle who is not an employee of this Board, an approved volunteer, or the parent of a student enrolled in this District and the holder of a currently-valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Michigan.

The responsibility of professional staff members for the discipline and control of students will extend to their transportation of students in a private vehicle. Drivers who are not professional staff members are requested to report student misconduct to the principal.

In scheduling transportation for field trips, it is preferred that school buses be used. The Superintendent or his/her designee may approve the use of private vehicles in situations in which budget or schedule restrictions make it prohibitive or impractical to use school buses.

When private vehicles are used, the following requirements must be met:

A.Only an adult (non-high school student) licensed driver shall be allowed to drive the vehicle. The health and driving quality of the driver shall also be taken into consideration.

B.The vehicle shall be equipped with seatbelts and the number of passengers limited to the number of seatbelts available. Seatbelts shall be used at all times by all passengers when the vehicle is in operation.

C.The vehicle shall be generally in good condition, particularly as it pertains to safety equipment such as brakes, horn, tires, lights, etc.

D.Vehicle and driver shall be insured.

E.No open-type vehicle, such as a pickup or truck, shall be used for transporting students.

F.A form verifying certain desired information to be signed by the driver of the vehicle shall be kept on file.

G.Parents of the children riding with the adult must be informed before the trip, give signed permission for their child to be transported by the other adult, and send the signed permission slip to the principal or Hearing Impaired supervisor before their child can participate in the trip.
