2210 - CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
The District shall maintain an ongoing, systematic process to establish and improve curriculum for all students at all school levels. For purposes of this policy and consistent communication throughout the District, curriculum shall be defined as all planned activities of the schools, including formal classroom instruction and out-of-class activity, both individual and group, necessary to accomplish the educational goals of the District.
It shall be the responsibility of the Superintendent to make recommendations to the Board of Education regarding the establishment and improvement of curricula, and related instructional programs and practices. In making such recommendations, the Superintendent will involve District administrators and other instructional staff -- and shall give due weight and consideration to the recommendations of coordinating District-wide curriculum development, reviewing textbook adoptions, and considering the establishment of new course offerings and additions and deletions to the instructional programs of the District.
It shall be the responsibility of the building principal to serve as the instructional leader of the school(s) where s/he serves as building administrator. In this capacity, the principal shall be responsible for making recommendations to the Superintendent or Curriculum Council regarding building-level course changes, textbook changes, and additions or deletions to instructional programs. The building principal shall establish a School Improvement Team to consider new building-level instructional programs, improvements to instructional programs already existing within the school, and provide information and recommendations regarding matters under consideration by the District Curriculum Council.
New programs and courses of study, the extensive alteration of the content of current instructional programs, and the elimination of current programs and courses of study which constitute a change from current policy will be subject to the approval of the Board. All curriculum proposals that come to the Board from the faculty and administration, curriculum committees, School Improvement Teams, and the District Curriculum Council shall be presented through the Superintendent. The Superintendent may assign or require further information and study on any such proposals prior to making his/her recommendation.
As educational leader of the District, the Superintendent shall be responsible to the Board for the development and evaluation of curriculum and the preparation of courses of study.
