2200 - DISTRICT CURRICULUM COUNCIL

A District Curriculum Council shall be established to coordinate and improve the District-wide curriculum as stated in the goals of the District, to review textbook adoptions, and to consider the establishment of new course offerings, and make recommendations regarding significant additions and deletions to the instructional programs, and to consider District-wide curriculum-related in-service education for the instructional staff of DeWitt Public Schools. The Assistant Superintendent shall serve as Chairperson of the District Curriculum Council; and shall develop administrative guidelines to govern matters related to the operation of the Council not specifically established by this policy.

The District Curriculum Council shall be a representative body. The Superintendent and two (2) representatives of the Board of Education (from the Board Policy and Program Committee), who shall serve as ex-officio members, the membership of the Council shall include:

 A.the principal of each school building in the District;

 B.the chairperson of the District K-6 grade level teams; chairs for 7-12 departments including Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies; chairs for K-12 departments including Fine Arts, Business/Computers, Music/Band, Physical Education/Health and Media Services and Special Education;

C. in the event that a District gifted/talented, Life Management, Foreign Language, Reading Recovery or Alternative Education Curriculum Committee program is not represented by the members in A through B above, and is found to be appropriate they may be appointed by the Superintendent;

 D.such other teachers, to be appointed by the Superintendent, as may be required to represent specific content areas or ongoing curriculum projects not already covered by A through C above.

Teacher representatives serving on the District Curriculum Council must have taught in DeWitt Public Schools for two (2) or more years. Meetings of the Curriculum Council are open to all interested staff; however, only those members as outlined above will have voting privileges.

The principal of a school and it’s internal curriculum or school improvement team or District curriculum committee must initially present and approve any program or curriculum changes prior to proposing them to the District Curriculum Council. The Curriculum Council shall review these proposals and make recommendations to the Superintendent. The Curriculum Council may make such standing and ad hoc committees as are necessary to carry out the mission of the Council. Matters brought before the Council dealing with changes to the curriculum must be presented for Board approval.
